Fox hunting has been illegal since 2004. That is more than two decades. Under the Hunting Act 2004, it is illegal to hunt wild mammals with dogs in England and Wales.
However, hunts continue, under the smoke screen of ‘trail hunting’, using loopholes in the Act to evade legal consequences
Trail hunting does not only affect foxes; the dogs used for hunting are also victims, being used as mere expendable objects:
According to Protect The Wild, there are hundreds of documented reports on dogs:
- Being killed in road traffic accidents or on railway tracks after hunts have deliberately and recklessly taken dogs into unsafe situations;
- Being abandoned after falling down mineshafts while the riders continued to hunt;
- Becoming tangled in barbed wire and being rescued by sabs.
These dogs are often kept in appalling conditions with little access to fresh food and water.
